Sixteen-year old Barley Tuckus knows the fragility of life. His mother died when he was three and he thinks of her often.

Barley feels so misunderstood by his father Tommy. When his dad marries Tammy (who has a daughter Leaza) and new siblings Timmy and Littler are born, Barley worries if he "belongs". He feels so alienated.

Barley doesn't want to get out of bed in the morning and spends so much time sleeping. He wonders if there's more than "just this world". When the teenage encumberances of daily life get to be overwhelming, he finds a new friend... an alien from outer space!
